Sentiment Trading Guide

What is Market Sentiment?

Market sentiment represents the overall attitude of traders and investors toward a particular currency pair or the forex market as a whole. It reflects whether market participants are feeling bullish (optimistic, expecting prices to rise) or bearish (pessimistic, expecting prices to fall).

How News Affects Currency Sentiment

Economic news and events are among the most powerful drivers of currency sentiment:

  • Interest Rate Decisions — Central bank rate changes directly impact currency demand. Higher rates typically strengthen a currency (bullish), while cuts weaken it (bearish).
  • Employment Data — Strong jobs reports (like US Non-Farm Payrolls) signal economic health and tend to be bullish for that currency.
  • GDP Reports — Higher-than-expected GDP growth is bullish; lower-than-expected is bearish.
  • Inflation Data — Rising inflation may trigger rate hikes (bullish for currency), while falling inflation could mean rate cuts (bearish).
  • Trade Balance — A trade surplus is generally bullish; a deficit can be bearish.
  • Political Events — Elections, policy changes, and geopolitical tensions create uncertainty that shifts sentiment rapidly.

Interpreting the Sentiment Score

Our sentiment analyzer uses a scale from -100 to +100:

-100 to -50: Strong Bearish

Overwhelmingly negative sentiment. Consider short positions or avoiding longs.

-50 to -20: Bearish

Negative sentiment dominates. Downtrend likely to continue.

-20 to +20: Neutral

Mixed signals. Market may be consolidating or waiting for a catalyst.

+20 to +50: Bullish

Positive sentiment prevails. Uptrend likely to continue.

+50 to +100: Strong Bullish

Overwhelmingly positive sentiment. Consider long positions or avoiding shorts.

Tips for Trading with Sentiment Analysis

  1. Combine with Technical Analysis — Sentiment works best when confirmed by chart patterns, support/resistance levels, and indicators.
  2. Watch for Extreme Readings — Extreme bullish or bearish sentiment can signal potential reversals (contrarian approach).
  3. Monitor News Calendar — Stay aware of upcoming high-impact events that could shift sentiment suddenly.
  4. Track Sentiment Trends — Look at how sentiment changes over time, not just the current snapshot.
  5. Use as Confirmation — Use sentiment as an additional layer of confirmation before entering trades.
  6. Be Aware of Sentiment Shifts — Sudden changes in sentiment often precede significant price moves.

Common Sentiment Trading Mistakes

  • Ignoring the bigger picture — Don’t trade solely on sentiment without considering the broader market context.
  • Overreacting to single events — One data point doesn’t define a trend. Look at the aggregate sentiment.
  • Confirmation bias — Don’t cherry-pick sentiment data that confirms your existing view.
  • Ignoring risk management — Even the strongest sentiment signals can be wrong. Always use stop losses.
