Leverage lets you control a large position with a small amount of capital. At 1:100 leverage, $1,000 controls $100,000 worth of currency.

The Double-Edged Sword

Leverage amplifies both profits and losses:

  • 1:30 leverage + 1% move = 30% return on capital
  • 1:100 leverage + 1% move = 100% return on capital
  • But -1% with 1:100 = -100% (total loss)

Margin Call Distance

This shows how far the market can move against you before a margin call:

  • 1:30 → ~30% adverse move before margin call
  • 1:100 → ~1% adverse move before margin call
  • 1:500 → ~0.2% adverse move before margin call
